When do you need a WordPress plugin?

WordPress has thousands of ready-made plugins, and most cover your needs. But sometimes no ready plugin exists for your site’s own function, or the one you find slows the site. Here are the cases where a custom plugin steps in.

When a custom plugin makes sense

  • Ready plugins do not fully meet the need and you keep stacking plugin on plugin.
  • A custom integration with an external system (accounting, booking, payment) is needed.
  • Speed and security: A light plugin written for a single purpose beats a heavy multi-feature one.
  • You have licensing or a custom business model.

Risks

A plugin not written to survive updates can break when WordPress updates. So standards-compliant, secure and documented code matters. Also every extra plugin is a maintenance load.

Alternatives

If your site is bloated with plugins, moving to a lightweight, static structure outside WordPress is also an option; the new version of this site was built that way. For a comparison see WooCommerce or a custom store.

We develop AYM Flow tools for multilingual WordPress sites. In these matters our software development and web design services work together. For our general approach see custom software or off-the-shelf.
