Custom software or off-the-shelf program?

When looking for software for a business process, the first question is usually: do we buy a ready-made program or have one built? The right answer depends on your business, but the criteria are clear.

The case for off-the-shelf

It starts fast, is usually cheaper, and support and updates are ready. If your work is a common process (accounting, basic stock, email), a ready-made program is often the sensible choice. In such cases we recommend the ready tool first.

The case for custom software

It fits your workflow exactly, carries no needless features and talks to the systems you want (site, payment, accounting). If you have processes that ready programs do not fit, custom software saves time. Our software development service covers these needs.

Questions to decide

  1. Does your work fit the standard flow of a ready program?
  2. Do you enter the same data in more than one place by hand?
  3. As you grow, will you hit the program’s limit?
  4. Must work continue when the internet drops? See offline-first software.

A middle road

Sometimes the best option is a small custom piece on top of a ready platform, for example a WordPress plugin. What time and cost depend on is in software project timeline and cost.

Among our own products, Multi Score Screen is an example of software developed specifically for sports venues. Describe your need by writing to us.
