What are backlinks and how do you earn them?

A backlink is a link another site gives to yours. Search engines read it as a sign that “that site trusts you”, so it is one of the most important authority signals in SEO.

Quality beats quantity

One link from a relevant, trustworthy and real site is better than hundreds of worthless links.

Earning them naturally

  1. Useful content: Guides and posts that people will cite; see growing SEO traffic with a blog.
  2. Local links: Local associations, the chamber of commerce, event and guide sites.
  3. Partners and customers: Firms you work with may mention you on their sites. Our own linking to projects we work on rests on this logic; for example Aslan Yacht and Spice Emlak.
  4. Press and news: Appearing in local news and blogs.
  5. Directories: Registering in trustworthy industry and local directories; do not forget the Google Business Profile: profile optimization.

What to avoid

Bought bulk links, link farms, automated comment spam. Search engines can penalise these.

Measurement

In Search Console’s “links” report you can see which sites link to you.

Backlinks alone are not enough; content and technical structure are needed together. For the frame see what is SEO and how does it work, and for the service see our SEO page.
