What is a domain and how to choose one

A domain is your website’s address on the internet, such as isimalan.com. Customers find you with it, and your email address depends on it. That is why choosing well and registering it in your own name matters.

A good domain

  • Short and memorable: It should be sayable on the phone and spelled without errors.
  • Matching the brand: The same as or very close to your business name.
  • Easy to spell: Avoid special characters, hyphens and digits if possible.
  • Meaningful: It may hint at your activity or place, but do not stretch it.
  • Trademark check: It should not closely resemble someone else’s brand.

Choosing the extension

.com is the most common and universal; .com.tr suits businesses focused on Türkiye. See .com or .com.tr for the choice.

Registration and ownership

The domain must be registered in your name. If an agency or acquaintance registers it in theirs, you will have trouble when you part. Track the renewal date; an expired domain means losing the site and email.

Next step

A domain alone is not enough; your site needs a place to be hosted. See what is hosting and hosting types. For domain and hosting management see our hosting and domains service, and for the site our web design. For business email we have setting up business email.
